Pilates is a system of mind-body exercises evolved from training principles of Joseph Pilates (1880-1967). Settling in New York after WWI, he invented ingenious equipment for injury rehabilitation. The “Reformer” has been refined and perfected over time. Over the past 20 years Pilates has become a popular training system for both general fitness and recreational exercise as well as physical therapy and clinical use.
Pilates dramatically transforms the way your body looks, feels and performs. It builds strength without excess bulk. It lengthens and strengthens muscle tissue and improves joint function as well as range of motion. It is particularly helpful for spine, shoulder, hip and core (the abdomen) conditioning. It teaches body awareness, breathing technique, good posture and easy, graceful movement.
Professional dancers have known the benefits of Pilates for decades. Top athletes use it for strength, flexibility, and injury prevention. Hollywood celebrities and supermodels use it to maintain their beautiful physiques.

Weight loss:
Some people ask whether Pilates is a weight loss system or a cardiovascular activity. When careful attention is given to dietary habits and calorie control, the benefits of Pilates training can contribute to weight loss and overall well being. A Pilates session is based on resistance training, not weights. Activities are slow and controlled -- a mind/body connection, but deliver an intense and targeted workout. While not strictly speaking a cardiovascular activity, you may work up a sweat. You’ll discover essential muscles you never knew you had!
Here are two YouTube video which will give you an idea of some of the exercises you will learn an perform in classes. Some of them are on an advanced level, but you'll be surprised! In time you will be able to do them!
